Children of all ages have an opportunity to improve their reading skills and make a new friend at the Independence Public Library by reading aloud to a dog.

Lenny is therapy-certified, meaning he has passed an obedience and temperament test and receives regular veterinary care. Lenny and his handler, Naomi, are from Therapy Dogs International.

Be sure to sign up in advance for a private fifteen-minute time slot between 6:00-8:00 pm to read to Lenny in Flutterby Cove. There will be another opportunity to read to Lenny on Thursday, October 12, from 6:00-8:00 pm.

There's a lot going on at today's Independence Farmers Market!

• Chili Cook-off (10 am - 12 Noon)  -- Open to the public to compete and vote.  With a free-will donation to the Historical Society, the public can taste all soups and vote for their favorite.  Winner will receive a gift basket.

• Indytel Boom Truck (8 am - 12 Noon) – Indytel will be at the market giving free rides to celebrate Public Power Week.

• Customer Appreciation Day - As a thank you to our customers for their support and business, free coffee (locally roasted by Hager’s Roasting Company from Quasqueton), lemonade, and a treat will be offered.

• Cookie decorating and a craft will be available to celebrate National 4-H Week.

The Independence Farmers Market offers locally grown produce, baked goods, crafts, flowers, bedding plants, and herbs. The purpose of the market is to connect customers directly with the person who grew the products in a fun, casual environment.

Located at the Wapsipinicon Mill (100 First Street West) from 8 am - 12 Noon.

The stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle have inspired generations of readers devoted to Sherlock Holmes.  Join us in welcoming Dr. Richard Caplan, an authority on Sherlock Holmes, for his presentation at the Independence Public Library at 6:30 pm in the Community Room.

Using his background in medicine and his love of literature, Dr. Caplan explores the persisting phenomenon of the great detective’s astounding longevity.  Dr. Caplan recently published a book concerning Doyle’s famous detective and is a recognized expert on Sherlock Holmes.

Sponsored by Humanities Iowa, this program is free and open to the public.
